Teaching

For questions related to OPIM Undergraduate Advising, see my Advising FAQ. These are the policies that were in force when I was advisor. Since I am no longer advisor, you must contact Prof. Kimbrough for any updates.

My teaching is focused on information technology strategy and information economics. The courses I have taught or will be teaching are listed below. If you are course shopping and want to see teaching ratings, try the Penn Course Review (Pennkey login required). Follow the links in the course title for syllalbi and more detailed course information:

  • OPIM101 - Introduction to the Computer as an Analysis Tool (current offering, Fall 2009): The course focuses on using computer based analytical tools and approaches from operations management, operations research, decisions processes and information economics to solve management problems you are likely to encounter at Wharton and in your careers.  Part of the course will involve working with the Goldsim simulation software and the Excel Solver.
  • OPIM210 - Management Information Systems (offered in Fall 2009 by Prof. Eric Clemons): This course is an overview of information technology management focusing on technology, organization and strategy. This course is a good introduction to various aspects of information systems and likely to be useful for students who are interested in careers in technology consulting or in information technology more broadly.
  • OPIM469/OPIM669 - Advanced Topics in Information Strategy (may return for Spring 2010): This was my advanced class on applying principles from the economics of information to developing strategies for high-tech and IT-based businesses. I truly enjoyed teaching this class but it was too difficult to manage alone (it was designed to be covered by at least two instructors). Pieces of this course will be incorporated into OPIM210 and in the next several years I hope to offer a restructured smaller version of the class. Currently, I maintain an archive of course materials for OPIMx69. This reflects the material as of 2006 (I will be updating to 2008 when time becomes available).
  • OPIM960/OPIM961 - Doctoral Seminar in Information Strategy and Economics (last taught, Spring 2008; will return in 2009-2010 year): These two courses represent the introductory (960) and advanced (961) doctoral level courses in my primary research area. 960 historically covered the core literature on IT value, technology and organizations, contract theory approaches to understanding IT management, and IT-enabled pricing strategy. The more advanced class focused on conducting research in ISE and the more advanced treatment of similar topics. This course is required for ISE doctoral students, and recommended for doctoral students in OPIM or other disciplines interested in information technology issues.

For the 2008-9 school year I am no longer the undergraduate advisor. Please contact Prof. Steve Kimbrough for questions about any of the disciplines covered in OPIM (operations, decision processes, information technology, information strategy) or administrative issues (e.g. OPIM transfers, OPIM101 waivers for dual degree students).
